No one expected the gift O.J. Simpson just gave to President Trump today. The 70-year-old former football super star was just granted parole after serving nearly 9 years behind bars.
However, what was even more surprising than the parole verdict was the fact that for the first time since President Trump announced his candidacy in 2015, he was not the “central the central focus of cable news coverage for a full day.”
Even President Trump probably didn’t expect all of the major news networks to lay low on their coverage of his presidency in favor of commentating on O.J. Simpson. The Hill reported that outside of breaking news coverage, it was the first time it has happened in nearly 2 years.
Making a rare decision to dump almost all political news to cover Simpson instead, Fox News, MSNBC, and CNN went wall-to-wall to cover Simpson's parole hearing on Thursday,” read the article on The Hill.
It has also been nearly 22 years since the world was captivated by O.J. Simpson’s original trial, for the double murder of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman. That trial had previously been deemed the trial of the century because of how many people stopped everything to tune in.
Jeffrey Toobin, who rose to fame partly due to the trial, was back today to cover the parole hearing. Nearly nine years ago, Simpson was sentenced to 33 years in prison for a 2007 armed robbery of sports memorabilia from a Las Vegas hotel room.
"After all these years, I thought I had lost the ability to be appalled, to be nauseated, to be outraged by the behavior of O.J. Simpson,” Toobin told CNN. "But I thought his statements were self-justifying, self-pitying, showing no remorse, no understanding, no sense of reality about his own life."
Toobin also had strong words for the American public after learning “The Juice” was unanimously voted to get out of jail. He ripped O.J. apart for lying and said, "Good luck to America once he's out.”
