World Champion Who Made 'Most Courageous Act of Any Sportsman' Dies at 70

A worldwide champion athlete has just passed away. Niki Lauda, a three-time Formula One champion died at the age of 70.

According to Bloomberg, Lauda was one of the “most prominent figure[s] in the aviation industry.” He won two of his three titles after he experienced a terrible crash that left him with severe burns.

Only a few weeks later, Lauda returned to the course for his second title. Fans said that Lauda's comeback was the "most courageous act of any sportsman."

Niki’s family were the ones to release the sad news about the racer's death. They confirmed that he passed away peacefully on Monday. The sports star had received a lung transplant just last year.

His family said, “His unique successes as a sportsman and entrepreneur are and remain unforgettable. His tireless drive, his straightforwardness and his courage remain an example and standard for us all. Away from the public gaze, he was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather. We will miss him very much."

Lauda’s first two driving championships took place in 1975 and 1977. It was in 1976 when he had a horrible crash and suffered from several burns.
