NFL Sunday football took a drastic political turn after a majority of players decided to protest during the national anthem. The protests, which have been making headlines since Colin Kaepernick started the movement last year, received a massive increase in the number of participants following President Donald Trump’s controversial remarks.
A few days prior to the games, Trump suggested that all players who protest during the national anthem should be fired. In response, many players followed Kaepernick’s example of taking a knee during the song, while others did not show up at all.
The Pittsburgh Steelers were among a few teams who chose to stay in their locker rooms when the “Star Spangled Banner” was sung out on the field. Steelers offensive tackle Alejandro Villanueva, who is a proud U.S. Army vet, was the only team player who stepped out to publicly display his respect for our country.
Lara Trump, in addition to many other conservatives, sent good thoughts to Villanueva for his bold and brave move. See Lara’s post below.
However, Steelers fans retaliated after the rest of the players “disrespected America’s flag.” Many posted videos of them burning their Steelers gear, according to CBS News, and threatened to boycott the Steelers and even the NFL altogether.
Conservative political commentator Mark Dice shared a video of a man burning a Steelers hoodie and hat, while the “Star Spangled Banner” played in the background. Next to the fire, the man is proudly holding up the American flag.
