Runways Shut Down at Major U.S. Airport After Emergency Landing, Smoking Aircraft

March 09, 2019Mar 09, 2019

The news was reported on early Saturday morning that all runways at Newark Liberty  International Airport were shut down. The New Jersey airport said that the runways were closed  “due to an emergency.”

The airport said,  “Due to an airport emergency,  all runways are currently closed. Please contact your airline for flight status update."

According to NBC, the shutdown occurred after an emergency landing took place at the airport. A flight from Canada to Florida was forced to make a landing at Newark. There were reports of smoke in the aircraft.

Though little information has been given regarding the flight in question, early reports indicate that at least two minor injuries took place. Additionally, the chutes were deployed in an attempt to get the passengers off of the smoking aircraft.

While information is still limited about the situation, the news was reported at around 11:00 a.m. EST that the airport was back up and running.
