The Office is one of the most famous shows on television and in the history of TV. It has become a classic in the few short years since it ended. Millions of people tune in to watch the episodes online via Netflix.
So many people watched The Office in 2018 that it became the most watched show on Netflix. Due to its popularity, many people were surprised to learn that Netflix will be letting go of the hit show.
"The network announced Tuesday The Office will leave Netflix by January 2021 and stream exclusively on its new streaming service, set to launch next year, for at least five years. NBCU said the beloved show is its 'most prized series,'" reported Fox.
NBC released a statement about the acquisition of the show.
“‘The Office’ has become a staple of pop-culture and is a rare gem whose relevance continues to grow at a time when fans have more entertainment choices than ever before,” Bonnie Hammer, Chairman of NBCUniversal Direct-to-Consumer and Digital Enterprises, said in a news release. “We can’t wait to welcome the gang from Dunder Mifflin to NBCUniversal’s new streaming service.”
Fans are bummed, to say the least. However, plans state that people will be able to still watch The Office on NBC's new platform for free. However, they will have to sit through ads in order to do so. Right now Netflix has zero commercials for users.
The streaming giant rebased a statement about the show's departure.
“We're sad that NBC has decided to take The Office back for its own streaming platform — but members can binge watch the show to their hearts' content ad-free on Netflix until January 2021,” Netflix tweeted in hopes of comforting its users.
