On Friday, sources reported that Megyn Kelly’s 9 a.m. Today show hour had been canceled. The news comes shortly after Kelly received backlash over a comment about wearing blackface for Halloween.
Megyn apologized for the comments on air. She made it clear that the uproar over the comment was not her intention.
Here are her original comments:
Her apology was completely sincere. She spoke about how she didn't want to add to the division in current culture.
"I want to begin with two words, I'm sorry,” said Kelly in her apology. “The country feels so divided and I have no wish to add to that pain and offense. I believe this is a time for more understanding, more love, more sensitivity, and honor. Thank you for listening and for helping me listen too."
However, her apology apparently wasn't enough for NBC. A source told PEOPLE about the decision.
“They’re contacting the staff and reassigning everyone today. Everyone’s being told that they still have a home here, but it won’t be on Megyn’s show,” one source says. “They haven’t made an official announcement about the show, but everyone knows what it means when they’re being moved somewhere else. The show is clearly over.”
PEOPLE was also told that Kelly hasn't necessarily been completely fired from NBC, and she hasn't been told the final decision. However, the source said that her 9 a.m. show “is most likely over.”
Kelly did not appear live on air Thursday morning. NBC announced the rest of this week’s broadcasts have been replaced with pre-taped episodes.
“Given the circumstances, Megyn Kelly Today will be on tape the rest of the week,” an NBC spokesperson confirmed to PEOPLE.
Now NBC has confirmed her exit. NBC News reported the news.
"Megyn Kelly Today is not returning," an NBC News spokesperson said. "Next week, the 9 a.m. hour will be hosted by other TODAY co-anchors.”
The announcement comes as Kelly is in talks with NBC News about her future at the network, which sources said were likely to include her leaving the company.
People are outraged over her forced exit. Twitter is blowing up with the discussion.
What do you think about her departure?
