On Tuesday, February 5, President Trump delivered his annual State of the Union address. The event came after several weeks of back-and-forth debate between President Trump and Speaker Pelosi regarding the date of it.
In January in the midst of the longest government shutdown in history, Speaker Pelosi sent President Trump a letter urging him to postpone the State of the Union address or to submit it in writing. At that time, the event was scheduled for the end of January.
Speaker Pelosi said that she thought the event should be suspended in light of the government shutdown, noting the safety of everyone involved. However, President Trump responded to her concerns, noting that the Secret Service had committed to it, despite the fact that government workers’ pay was being temporarily held.
After some back-and-forth dialogue, President Trump and Speaker Pelosi ultimately opted to change the date of the SOTU to February 5.
Back when Pelosi asked Trump to postpone his address or submit it in writing, many people held to the idea that she simply did not want to stand behind him as he talked about the recent achievements in the country.
Now, after the speech took place and videos have surfaced, many people on the Internet believe that the theory was proven to be true. Rather than through her words, however, viewers think that Pelosi showed her distaste for President Trump through her actions.
Vice President Pence and Speaker Pelosi were seated directly behind President Trump during his speech. Every time that the House Speaker would clap, she would do it in a very harsh and interesting way. It was obvious that the clap was not a gesture saying, “congratulations!”
After the event, Pelosi’s daughter, Christine, spoke out about the clap. She said that she had seen the disappointed gesture on her mother’s face before.
She wrote, “#waybackwednesday- oh yes that clap took me back to the teen years. She knows. And she knows that you know. And frankly, she’s disappointed that you thought this would work. But here’s a clap. #youtriedit.”
Several people made hilarious memes with Pelosi’s strange applause. Below are some of the examples:
After the photos of her went viral, Pelosi reportedly commented that her clapping was "sincere" and not sarcastic.
