Roughly one week ago, the New York Police Department pleaded for help in locating a famous entertainer. Desmond Amofah, also known as the popular gaming YouTuber “Etika,” vanished shortly after posting a concerning video on his YouTube channel.
The famed YouTuber, 29, worried viewers when he expressed suicidal thoughts and continuously apologized in regards to his mental health struggles. In the video, Etika said he “had no intention” of taking his own life but implied that he was going to commit suicide.
A sad update was released in the missing person case late Monday, June 25th, which marked the 6th day of Etika’s disappearance. According to BBC, a body was discovered floating in New York’s East River during the investigation.
On Tuesday afternoon, local authorities did confirm that the body is Etika, reported BuzzFeed. This tragic update comes shortly after several of the social media star's belongings, including a Nintendo Switch, were found on the Manhattan Bridge.
The cause of death was ruled as a suicide by drowning, reported the New York Post.
Prior to his death, Etika struggled emotionally. Last April, the YouTuber recorded a live stream of police and SWAT trying to enter his apartment for a welfare check. Etika did not cooperate, so police were forced to break down his door before escorting him out on a gurney.
Please pray for his loved ones during this difficult time. If you or someone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts, please contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.
