A tragic story recently rocked the nation. An armed gunman stormed the campus at UNC Charlotte and began to fire on innocent people, including students. Many are praising the actions of one man for saving the lives of so many other people. Riley Howell, an ROTC candidate, and student tackled the gunman in an attempt to stop the attack.

"Riley Howell, 21, died in his classroom on April 30 after charging and tackling the alleged shooter, identified as 22-year-old Trystan Andrew Terrell," reported Fox.

Howell had been a member of the college ROTC program. He had delayed entering the military to instead earn his degree and go through the ROTC program. Now, the military is giving Howell and amazing honor.

"The University of North Carolina at Charlotte student and ROTC cadet -- who died a "hero" during a confrontation with the gunman during last week’s shooting at the college -- was laid to rest Sunday with full military honors," according to reports.

Officials spoke out about his unbelievable courage and sacrifice during the ceremony.

"His sacrifice saved lives," Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Kerr Putney said in a news conference. "What he did was he took the assailant off his feet, and then the heroes that we have here were able to apprehend him from there."

Friends and family also addressed those in attendance. They mentioned how Riley was adventurous, affectionate and big-hearted. He will surely be missed for the rest of time.

"Hundreds of people attended Howell’s memorial service Sunday in Lake Junaluska, N.C. Howell, an ROTC cadet, was given a burial with full military honors, including an honor guard," reported Fox.

Since the service, Howell's story has spread like wildfire online. Now, the military has announced they are bestowing a tremendous honor on the fallen ROTC cadet.

"Riley Howell, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte student who died April 30 while tackling a gunman, has been awarded a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star, according to a Facebook post by the Waynesville, North Carolina, police," reported CNN.

The honor is a magnificent way to acknowledge Riley's heroism. He charged the shooter and sacrificed his life so that others may live. A plaque that the family received tells his story.

"It is with great Honor and Respect to present the American Hero Award posthumously to Riley C. Howell. Cadet Howell with complete disregard for his personal safety, made a decision to stop an Active Shooter on his college campus."

Please join us in continuing to pray for Riley and his family!
