Today marks the 16th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. For the commemoration, Vice President Mike Pence visited Shanksville, Pennsylvania to make remarks on the heroes of the United Flight 93 crash.
While President Trump was honoring the victims, first responders, and military in the Pentagon on Monday morning, Pence was specifically focusing on honoring those who were on United Flight 93. The passengers on board are known as heroes for their bravery on 9/11.
United Flight 93 was reportedly intended to hit the U.S. Capitol building, but the trapped passengers took action against the terrorists and forced them to crash the plane early. While all of the passengers on board the flight lost their lives when the plane crashed in a field in Shanksville, PA, they saved many other lives with their bravery.
Among the lives that were potentially saved, was Vice President Mike Pence. During that time, Pence was serving as a member of the House of Representatives. On 9/11, he was scheduled to be in the U.S. Capitol building, the intended target of United Flight 93.
During his speech, he specifically thanked the passengers for potentially saving his own life.
He said, "I'm also here to pay a debt of gratitude to the heroes of Flight 93 on a much more personal basis. For their actions on that day in these skies saved American lives and as my wife, Karen, who joins me here today knows, it's a debt I don't think I'll ever be able to repay. Because among the many lives that were saved by their selfless courage, they might well have saved my own life that day 16 years ago.”
"I will always believe that I and many others in our nation's capital were able to go home that day to hug our families because of the courage and selflessness of the heroes of Flight 93," he added. "So for me, it's personal. And I speak on behalf of a grateful nation.”
Below is the footage of another part of Mike Pence's speech, where he described the chaos that took place on 9/11.
