Former Destiny's Child singer Michelle Williams is no longer engaged to Christian pastor Chad Johnson. She announced the sad news on Instagram on Friday morning.
The 38-year-old was posting on Instagram about her latest single, "Fearless," when she dropped the news. She wrote in the post that she was single, reported PEOPLE.
“I still remain fearless,” she wrote in simple white text on a black background. “I guess I still remain single! Things didn’t work out. The healing that needs to take place is a must! I don’t wanna destroy another relationship. Blessings to him, his family and ministry. #FEARLESS”
Williams and Johnson, 40, announced their engagement in April. The couple made news in November when Williams revealed that Johnson had told her that he wouldn't have sex before marriage.
The couple met in March 2017 at Johnson's Arizona spiritual retreat. Johnson is a life coach who has also worked as a chaplain for the Pittsburgh Steelers and L.A. Dodgers.
Williams revealed she was in a dark place when she went to the retreat. After being cheated on, she felt the need to get away.
“I just needed to go somewhere where I could get a message of hope and restoration, rejuvenation — get connected to God.”
They couple bonded over their faith during the retreat. Johnson popped the question a year later.
“I was so shocked! I was weeping and wailing,” Williams said after the proposal. “He proposed to me in Pebble Beach at this beautiful resort and I was crying so loud that people were turning around, going back to their rooms and stuff, they weren’t coming to the restaurant because they were like, ‘Did she just find out something he did bad? What happened?'” she added.
However, things haven't been perfect for the couple. Williams broke off the engagement twice in the weeks after Johnson proposed. After that, she was hospitalized and treated for severe depression.
“I’m assuming a lot of relationships go through a period of time where one or more people get overwhelmed,” shared Williams. “You don’t even know what it’s like to have real love because I’ve had to fight so much in past relationships: fight to have a place, fight for you to see me, fight for you to love me, fight for you to be faithful. In this relationship, I didn’t have to do that, but I was so ready to fight.”
After the hard times for the couple, Johnson held onto Williams. They started going through individual and premarital counseling on their reality show Chad Loves Michelle, which premiered on the Oprah Winfrey Network in early November.
Her rep did not respond to PEOPLE's request to comment. There's no word on what will happen to their reality show.
