Troubling news was reported on Tuesday, July 31 that dozens of people, including U.S. citizens, were injured in a plane crash in northern Mexico. The airplane crashed during takeoff due to a heavy hail storm.
Thankfully, no one on the entire flight passed away as a result of the crash. Many people, including mainstream media, were calling it a miracle. However, around 85 people are injured. According to Yahoo!, the plane was attempting to take off during the storm but was forced into an emergency landing and was “engulfed in flames.”
The governor of Durango Jose Rosas said, “It is confirmed that there have been no deaths from the flight #AM2431 accident.”
Civil defense spokesman Alejandro Cardoza said, “Approximately 85 people are injured.”
Cardoza also said that the fire began as the plane landed but “fortunately no one suffered burns.” While a few people were seriously injured, the majority of the injuries were relatively minor.
The flight was reportedly carrying 97 passengers and 4 crew members. When the news first emerged of the crash, many people were expecting a much worse outcome. The first photos showed the plane engulfed in flames and didn’t give details about the nature of the crash or the status of the passengers aboard.
Mexico President Enrique Pena Nieto said, “I pray that the crew and all the passengers are OK.”
