After Facing Backlash in #MeToo Movement, Meryl Streep Blasts Trump Women

Following the massive Harvey Weinstein sex scandal that sparked nationwide attention late last year, the women’s #MeToo movement has taken over. Several other scandals in Hollywood, media, and politics have been exposed, but women are dedicated to ending sexual violence.

The movement, which focuses on preventing sexual assault cases, was originally started by Tarana Burke in 2006, but it did not go viral until 2017. After Weinstein’s fallout, actress Alyssa Milano encouraged women to write “Me Too” on social media if they were a victim of sexual assault. The campaign blew up overnight.

Since then, dozens of well-known women have come out to share their story and publicly take a strong stance against the issue including Rose McGowan, Taylor Swift, Reese Witherspoon, and many others.

Award-winning actress Meryl Streep, however, has faced a lot of backlash for staying silent in the #MeToo movement. When asked about her silence, she instead shifted the focus to the Trump women, blasting Melania and Ivanka for not speaking up.

She told the New York Times, "I don't want to hear about the silence of me. I want to hear about the silence of Melania Trump. I want to hear from her.”

Streep continued, “She has so much that's valuable to say. And so does Ivanka. I want her to speak now.”

According to New York Daily News, her reasoning for staying silent was her lack of participation on social media—she has no Twitter or Facebook. Additionally, she was reportedly shocked by the stories and “had no idea” that was going on all of the years she worked with Weinstein.

Previously, TMZ reported that posters containing photos of Streep and Weinstein were plastered around Hollywood with the caption “She Knew.”
