In 2017, President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump began Mother's Day weekend a bit early, celebrating mothers at the White House. The Trumps welcomed service members, spouses, and mothers to the East Wing for remarks and a performance by the Army Chorus and the Marine Band.
"This is one of the many opportunities for us to thank the incredible military mothers who love and care for our nation's heroes, and they are heroes, so thank you very much, and the mothers are heroes, too," Trump said, according to CNN. "It is your sacrifice that protects our nation safeguards, our liberties and makes sure our beautiful American flag always waves proudly above our very glorious land."
This year is very similar. Melania Trump claimed that although Mother's Day is celebrated only one day a year, she believes that mothers should be celebrated every single day, especially if they are military mothers.
On the subject of military mothers, Melania claims that they should not only receive recognition for loving their children but for the "dedication and sacrifice" that they make on behalf of the United States.
"I know I speak on behalf of my husband...when I tell you how much this administration supports those who serve, which includes not only those enlisted but also their families, too."
"In closing, I want to thank each of you for your unique roles as military mothers, whether you are enlisted and actively serving, or if you have a child in our military. You are such a special part of this country for all that you give."
