Melania Releases Statement After Huge Controversy Over What She Wore to the Border

On Thursday, First Lady Melania Trump visited the border. According to her spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham, she just wanted “to see a realistic view of what’s happening.”

“She wants to see what’s real,” Grisham told CNN. “This was 100% her idea," Added Grisham. “She wanted to come down. She will continue to update her husband.”

Melania visited Upbring New Hope Children’s Center in McAllen, Texas. There she was involved in a roundtable discussion, and she thanked them for their work.

“I want to thank you for your hard work, your compassion and your kindness,” Melania told the staff.

However, the focus wasn't on Melania's visit to the border. The focus was on a jacket that she wore at the beginning of the trip.

As she departed the White House on Thursday morning, Melania wore a jacket that had "I REALLY DON'T CARE. DO U?" written on the back. The jacket reportedly costs $39 and came from the store Zara, reported CNBC.

The optics of the jacket were questionable. It seemed to convey a message that was contradictory to Melania's compassionate desire to see the condition of children at the border.

Melania removed the jacket before landing in Texas. However, it still caused controversy.

Even Conservatives were critical of her clothing choice. Conservative commentator and writer Matt Walsh tweeted Melania's decision to wear that particular jacket.

The first lady's communications director Stephanie Grisham issued a response to the statement. She emphasized that Melania's fashion choices are not what is important about what she did today.

She wrote in a statement, "It's a jacket. There was no hidden message. After today's important visit to Texas, I hope the media isn't going to choose to focus on her wardrobe."

She also tweeted, "Today’s visit w the children in Texas impacted @flotus greatly. If media would spend their time & energy on her actions & efforts to help kids - rather than speculate & focus on her wardrobe - we could get so much accomplished on behalf of children. #SheCares #ItsJustAJacket."
