Following President Trump’s executive order to stop illegal immigrant families from being separated into age specific facilities, Melania took action of her own on Thursday.
Melania traveled to Texas on an unannounced trip to get an unbiased account of what is really happening at the border. “She wants to see what’s real,” Melania’s spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham told CNN. “She wants to see a realistic view of what’s happening.”
Melania’s first stop was at the Upbring New Hope Children’s Center in McAllen, Texas. “We’re honored to show you our shelter,” Upbring CEO Dr. Kirk Senske told Melania. “We treat them like our own children.
During a roundtable discussion at the facility, Melania thanked the staff for everything they are doing for the children. “I want to thank you for your hard work, your compassion and your kindness,” Melania told the staff.
The first lady showed extreme compassion for the children, asking questions into the children’s well-being, physical health and mental health. Melania also asked how many times per week the children get to talk to their parents whom are housed in separate facilities. The answer she received is that the children speak to their parents twice a week.
According to Grisham, Melania told President Trump that she was heading down to Texas and that the President was incredibly supportive of the idea. “This was 100% her idea,” Grisham said. “She wanted to come down. She will continue to update her husband.”
