President Trump and First Lady Melania have mentioned several times that they were looking forward to their first Christmas in the White House when they could freely say “Merry Christmas” and focus on the reason for the season.
At the National Christmas Tree Lighting, President Trump talked about the love of God available to the world and about the reason that we celebrate Christmas in the first place: the birth of Jesus. Now, Melania is embracing the love surrounding this holiday and using it for good.
On Wednesday, the First Lady joined several children who were sorting through toys and making holiday cards in a military base stop just outside of Washington. Melania was helping with a toy drive for the organization Toys for Tots.
She said, “Today, I’m here to support the amazing work that Toys for Tots has been doing to make the holidays brighter for children across the country.”
“It is my hope that during this holiday season, it is not about gifts, it is about family, service, and gratitude,” she continued.
According to The Hill, Melania was speaking to military families, including around 40 children. She thanked the Marine Corps Reserve for putting on an annual toy drive.
She said, “On a personal note, as my first year as First Lady comes to an end, I have been privileged to witness the spirit and resilience of so many people in our country.”
She concluded, “After this year’s devastating hurricane season, I hope everyone watching at home will consider giving back to programs like Toys for Tots. We must continue to look out for and help each other.”
