A horrific fire has broken out at the historic Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. According to the BBC, the fire could be linked to renovation work. However, the cause is not clear yet. According to NBC, the roof has collapsed and the entire frame is on fire.

First Lady Melania Trump responded to the fire with sorrow. She also shared that she's praying for everyone's safety.

She wrote, "My heart breaks for the people of Paris after seeing the fire at Notre Dame Cathedral. Praying for everyone’s safety."

President Trump also responded to the fire. He reacted in sadness about the tragic fire.

"So horrible to watch the massive fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Perhaps flying water tankers could be used to put it out. Must act quickly!"

The cathedral, which is officially known as the Notre-Dame de Paris, was begun in 1160 and largely completed in 1260. It is considered the best example of Gothic architecture.

It is the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Paris. Over 1.2 million people visit the cathedral every year, which makes it the most visited monument in Paris.

People flooded to social media to share videos and pictures of the fire.

The cathedral was popularized in the book "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" by Victor Hugo. The novel revived interest in Notre Dame and led to it being restored and cleaned of grime.
