Melania Gets Harsh Criticism, Accusations Over State of the Union Outfit Choice

On Tuesday, January 30, President Trump delivered his first State of the Union address. Hundreds of top politicians, reporters, and honored guests joined the president and First Lady Melania at the U.S. Capitol for the event.

Overall, the favorability of the event was high. On Wednesday morning, CBS released a poll that revealed what Americans thought about the speech. 75% of viewers approved of it.

While many of the reports following the SOTU have been positive, there is one particular accusation that quickly gained momentum. Oddly, it is not targeted at President Trump and actually isn't about politics at all.

The accusations and criticism are regarding First Lady Melania's outfit choice at the event. Melania made a grand entrance wearing all shades of white.

The first lady wore a Christian Dior ivory pantsuit, a Dolce & Gabbana white blouse, and nude Christian Louboutin shoes. While some people complimented her decision to wear light colors and stand out, attributing it to her pristine fashion sense, others formed harmful accusations about it.

MSNBC's Sally Kohn made an accusation, later claiming it was a joke, that Melania was dressed in all white as a racist ploy. When she posted it on Twitter, hundreds of her followers formed the same opinion.

Another harmful accusation that gained more attention was that First Lady Melania wore all white as a silent protest against the president. In the last couple of weeks, there have been several rumors that President Trump and Melania have been having marital problems. However, the White House gave a response to those rumors in an effort to silence them.

Still, CNN reporter Kate Bennett believes that Melania's all-white fashion statement could have been tied to last year's protest against the president.

She said, "You know, she's wearing a cream-colored suit there, which I find interesting. Remember last year, the female Democratic Senators all wore white, a bunch of them to protest Trump's policies against women. There was even a hashtag, women wear white. Listen, it could be a total coincident, but I just find a lot of the stuff she does these days, to look at it twice."
