For many pregnant women, it's only natural for them to caress their baby bump. After all, their child is growing in there.

However, Meghan Markle found herself the target of internet bullying for doing just that. After she appeared at the British Fashion Awards last week to present an award to the Givenchy designer who created her wedding dress, people on the internet began to comment on the fact that her hand was always protectively resting on her baby bump.

Instead of focusing on her stunning one-shoulder, velvet Givenchy gown, the internet focused on how she cradled her baby bump. The Duchess of Sussex is due to give birth to her and Prince Harry's first child in the spring.

People have been criticizing Meghan for putting her hands on her stomach since the beginning of her pregnancy. In October, she was photographed putting her hands under her small baby bump.

For many, it's a sweet illustration of how much she loves her baby and looks forward to becoming a mother. But others found it offensive.

#Meghan Markle holding on to that bump like someone’s about to snatch it,” wrote one Twitter user in response to images of the Duchess at the awards show according to Today.

"Seriously, no pregnant woman poses for photo like this. Ever. She’s such an actress. #MeghanMarkle #duchessofsussex #BritishFashionAwards #actingup" wrote another.

However, there were people who came to her defence. They pointed out that it's normal or that she can do whatever she wants.

However, reason shows it's normal for women to cradle their baby bumps. For one, it's a large and unusual part of the body. Also, it helps women to bond with the baby in their womb.

Georgia Rose of Village Maternity in New York City, a midwife who had her own practice for over two decades and also taught at her alma mater, Columbia University, weighed in on the controversy. She told PEOPLE that pregnant women touching their bellies is a “beautiful thing.”

“This is a totally normal thing that mothers do, and they do it instinctively and naturally,” she explains.

So there it is. The haters can leave Meghan and her baby alone. In other Meghan news, her baby bump appears to have grown even more. See the pictures.
