Megachurch Responds After Outback Server Bashes Them for No Tip, Gets Fired

For 25-year-old Outback Steakhouse server Tamlynn Yoder, preparing a $735 take-out order for a multi-campus megachurch based in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida was a massive amount of work that took time away from her other customers. She expected at least a modest tip. She got none.

After packaging and delivering 25 steaks, 25 chickens, and 25 potatoes to a car driven by a representative of Christ Fellowship on Thursday, according to the Palm Beach Post, and receiving no gratuity for it, Yoder vented her frustrations by bashing the church on Facebook. She felt especially burned because she only made $18 in tips that day and a 15 percent tip would have been over $100.

“Tips is how we make our money; we still make a low wage as servers,” she said.

But the next day, Outback fired Yoder for her social media rant after someone informed the church about it. Even though she didn’t mention where she worked, she had violated the company’s policy about not commenting about customers on social media, according to WSVN.

The church had actually contacted her employer in order to offer Yoder the missing tip, not get her in trouble, they said. The Outback restaurant was so bothered by their server’s behavior, though, that they refunded Christ Fellowship it’s $735 for the order.

According to Fox News, church official David Lonsberry explained, “We did not call the restaurant to have her fired, we wanted to get the situation resolved.”

He also gave a reason for why Yoder didn’t get a tip, saying, “That night, we had a volunteer go to the restaurant and pick up the order since we were having a big conference. He probably didn’t know to tip since it was a rush of the moment thing.”

Now on Monday, we’ve learned that Christ Fellowship felt so bad about Yoder losing her job that they contacted her directly and gave her compensation that was “more than the tip” to help make up for things.

“[Christ Fellowship] said a couple of the church families came together for me,” Yoder said.
