A prominent pastor of a well-known megachurch is making headlines this week. Andy Savage, the pastor of Highpoint Church in Memphis, Tennessee, made a stunning confession during a recent service.
Savage opened up to his congregation about accusations that he had inappropriate relations with a minor in his church while he was a staff member. The confession came after he was accused of the misconduct by the girl, who is now a grown woman.
"Jules Woodson was 17 years old when she says she was sexually assaulted by Savage during a ride home from church. At the time, Savage was a 22-year-old youth minister at a Houston church," reported CBS.
"As a college student on staff at a church in Texas more than 20 years ago, I regretfully had a sexual incident with a female high school senior in the church," he said.
Woodson went public about the incident that after the #MeToo movement swept the nation recently. She said she failed to speak out at the time because of fear and not fully comprehending what had happened. When Savage asked his church congregation to please forgive him, they gave him a standing ovation.
"I did it because I was scared and I was in shock and I didn't understand what was happening," Woodson said.
Woodson also said that after the incident, Savage got down on his knees and apologized. She also said that Savage told her to keep the incident a secret and never tell anyone. The church recently issued a statement after the story came to light. They said there will be additional information from Andy and the church soon.
