Over the last few weeks, troubling reports have emerged about one of the world's most popular fast food chains, McDonald's. Dozens of people have become extremely ill after eating at the restaurant in several different states!

Last week, reports confirmed that around 105 cases of cyclosporiasis were found in people who had recently eaten a McDonald's salad. The issue was over a parasite that had contaminated the lettuce in the salads, and that particular parasite causes intestinal issues.

As of last week, the cases were limited to Illinois and Iowa. According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, 90 cases of cyclosporiasis were confirmed. The Iowa Department of Public Health confirmed an additional 15 cases.

Now, however, the parasite has spread to several other states. Cases have now reportedly emerged in Missouri,  Wisconsin, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Minnesota.

The company released a statement over the situation, saying that they are stopping the salad sales until they can switch lettuce suppliers. They said that they made this decision "out of an abundance of caution."

They said, "McDonald's is committed to the highest standards of food safety and quality control. We are closely monitoring the situation and cooperating with the state and federal public health authorities as they further investigate."

Symptoms of cyclosporiasis include loss of appetite, weight loss, cramps, bloating, diarrhea, nausea, and fatigue. Food safety expert Martin Bucknavage talked about how the lettuce would have gotten contaminated in the first place.

He said, "Some water had to become contaminated and then used to irrigate the crops that become salad. These spores get into the water and survive for long periods of time. It could come from someplace upstream."

Though the situation is being resolved by the company stopping sales of the salad in the various states that have confirmed cases, it is still wise to avoid McDonald's salads for the time being in surrounding states as well!
