Recently, NBC’s highest-paid news anchor was fired from the network. The “Today Show” hosts revealed that Matt Lauer was fired after a complaint of sexual misconduct was filed against him.
The network said that a coworker submitted a detailed report of sexual misconduct allegations against Lauer. They said that while it was the only complaint they had received, they had reason to believe that it was not an isolated incident.
After the news emerged, several women came forward to share their strange experiences with Lauer as well. Now, the original woman who brought her case forward is “terrified” that she will be identified.
Attorney Ari Wilkenfield is the lawyer of the original accuser. Wilkenfield told TODAY that his client’s deepest fear is that she will be discovered.
He said, “My client is terrified and she does live in constant fear that people are going to track her down and figure out who she is.”
“She doesn’t want to be known,” he continued. “She feels terrified for herself, and she feels badly for the many other women who are suspected of being her, who are also being hounded and harassed by people who are just trying to get the details of who the woman is.”
Wilkenfield noted that the network has not had the best interest of his client in mind, and already has revealed information about the situation that should not have been revealed. For instance, the network said that the assault took place at the 2014 Sochi Olympics.
Wilkenfield said, “NBC has a duty to maintain confidentiality. That means to maintain secrecy over her name and to hold to themselves the details of her story. And they have not done a good job of doing that. They know exactly what they’ve done, and they need to stop.”
“There’s a hunt underway to figure out who she is,” the attorney continued. “And I think that’s going to have a chilling effect on other women who might want to come forward and tell their stories.”
The lawyer said that when his client told her experience to the network, the only thing she asked for was confidentiality. He also noted that his client was “incredibly brave” and paved a way for other women to come forward.
He said, “In doing so in the way that she has, she’s also shined a light on the different ways women can come forward to talk about sexual harassment to their employees.”
