According to ABC News, at least four townhouses collapsed. The incident took place around 55 miles south of Baltimore, Maryland.
Deputy Chief of the North Beach Volunteer Fire Department Stephen Stanton said that firefighters arrived on the scene and immediately requested a second alarm. He said that the first group of firefighters attempted to rescue two people trapped inside one of the townhouses.
Thankfully, it appears that the eight firefighters on the scene will be alright. Three of them were taken to local hospitals for burn treatment, while the other five were treated for heat exhaustion.
Sadly, two people died in the fires. One man, a 20-year-old, was rescued in critical condition. Sadly, he died shortly after.
Governor Larry Hogan said, “Keeping our Chesapeake Beach community in our thoughts tonight after this terrible fire. Our prayers are with the loved ones of the victims, and we wish full and speedy recoveries for the first responders who were injured.”
According to Fox News, the fire marshal believes that the fire was an accident. However, the cause is still under investigation.
