In recent years, gender identity has been attacked in America. Many folks, mostly from the liberal point of view, wish to make gender a fluid concept and have even rejected gender labeling altogether.

Now, a troubling news story is making headlines that is highlighting why gender identity is so important. A biological man just won a women's world cycling event after claiming to identify as a woman.

"Rachel McKinnon, a professor at the College of Charleston, won the women’s sprint 35-39 age bracket at the 2018 UCI Masters Track Cycling World Championships in Los Angeles. McKinnon, representing Canada, bested Caroline Van Herrikhuyzen of the Netherlands and American cyclist Jennifer Wagner to take home the gold," according to the Daily Caller.

The concept of trans women competing with biological women has been a controversial topic in sports. Many of those in favor of the competition argue that if society allows a trans woman to be seen as a "real" woman then sports professionals should also be required to recognize their changed gender.

Social media had mixed emotions about the race and McKinnon's gold. Some supported the win and others opposed it. McKinnon has since spoken out to say that this is "bigger" than sports.

“This is bigger than sports, and it’s about human rights,” McKinnon said to USA Today. "By catering to cisgender people’s views, that furthers transgender people’s oppression. When it comes to extending rights to a minority population, why would we ask the majority? I bet a lot of white people were pissed off when we desegregated sports racially and allowed black people. But they had to deal with it.”
