America’s national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner,” has been our country’s theme song since it was adopted by Congress in 1931. The famous song has been recognized nationwide for dozens of years, being sung at various sporting events, school events, etc.
Unfortunately, the national anthem has been the subject of a major controversy recently involving the NFL. After former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick began kneeling during the song in protest last year, many other professional football players have followed, which has sparked outrage among the majority of fans.
Kaepernick, promoting Black Lives matter values and insisting that people of color are greatly mistreated, was dropped from his team and has been a free agent since then. Although he angered many conservatives and Christians for disrespecting our flag, he has gained the support of liberal communities and organizations.
On Tuesday, November 7th, it was reported that California’s NAACP is starting a campaign to encourage the removal of “The Star-Spangled Banner” as the national anthem for the United States of America.
Their argument: The song is “racist.”
According to Fox, the NAACP believes, “[The national anthem is] one of the most racist, pro-slavery, anti-black songs in the American lexicon.”
The organization will reportedly seek support from California lawmakers at the beginning of next year, stated The Sacramento Bee. Their hope is to get a different song reinstated as America’s national anthem.
Additionally, the NAACP wants to get Kaepernick back on a football team. They don’t blame the former 49ers player for the controversy; they think President Trump is actually at fault.
NAACP’s president said, “We owe a lot of it to Kaepernick. I think all this controversy about the knee will go away once the song is removed…[President] Trump got in the middle of it. He blew it all out of proportion.”
