Dave Semenko, former ice hockey player, passed away just weeks before his 60th birthday on June 29th, 2017. According to the New York Times, he died from cancer.
Semenko is best-known for his time playing with the Edmonton Oilers and is commonly referred to as Wayne Gretzky’s ‘bodyguard’, one of Semenko’s former teammates. After his passing, Gretzky released a statement:
“One of the first Oilers I met in 1978, I didn’t know at the time the impact he would have in my life and my career. He was the toughest player I knew and yet the biggest Teddy Bear you would ever know. A beloved Oiler that will be missed dearly because of his kind heart and funny sense of humour. He made us all better people. RIP # 27, thanks for your friendship.”
Other members and fans of the hockey industry were also devastated after hearing the sad news and expressed their condolences via social media. Many remembered Semenko as a ‘legend’ and one of the ‘toughest’ hockey players of all time.
Please keep Dave Semenko’s friends, family, and loved ones in your prayers. Thank you!
