At the Golden Globes in 2017, entertainers took license at ridiculing President Trump and his policies. Among them, actress Meryl Streep’s diatribe expressed a sentiment shared by many in Hollywood.
During her acceptance speech for the Cecil B. DeMille Award, which ran almost six minutes, Streep denounced Trump for his campaign antics and for a 2015 incident where he allegedly mocked a disabled reporter – which Trump has repeatedly denied.
"It kind of broke my heart when I saw it,” said Streep, reported CNN. “and I still can't get it out of my head because it wasn't in a movie, it was real life.”
She continued, “This instinct to humiliate when it's modeled by someone in the public ... by someone powerful, it filters down into everyone's life because it kind of gives permission for other people to do the same."
She called on the press to “hold power to account, to call him on the carpet for every outrage.”
Recently, Kurt Russell spoke out against Hollywood actors who “get political,” who use their influence as a political platform. According to PS Republic, Russell believes it’s time to curb that vitriol.
“This is a business that’s heavily promulgated by people who have a politically liberal bent,” Russell said. “I don’t begrudge them that. I’m a libertarian; frankly, I think my liberalness goes far beyond theirs in a lot of ways.”
“But yeah, we think differently, and maybe that’s cut me out of some things. I don’t care,” he said, adding that for him, the work of an actor should stand alone.
“People know I get along great with all kinds of directors, all kinds of actors. And I tell you, you hire me, I will show up, 24/7, and I will give you 100%. I will help you fix whatever problems come up. You hire me, I’m your boy.
As for those actors who feel the urge to rant and rave and berate, Russell’s final message to them is one he believes in for himself: “It’s all about the work. And when that’s done, I am done.”
