A tragedy took place in a city just outside Tokyo on Tuesday morning. A Japanese man carrying two knives waded into a crowd of schoolgirls at a bus stop and began stabbing them one by one, according to The Washington Post.

The man killed an 11-year-old and an adult. He also wounded at least 17 others. After the attack, the middle-aged man apparently committed suicide by stabbing himself in the neck.

The children, who are between the ages of 6 and 12, are students at a private Catholic school. They were preparing to get on their school bus when the attack happened.

The stabbing took place at 7:45 a.m. in Kawasaki city. The adult who was killed was a Japanese Foreign Ministry official, Satoshi Oyama, 39.

Oyama's daughter attends the school. The injured consisted of 16 children and an adult; three children and a woman were seriously injured.

Police quoted a bus driver who witnessed the assault as saying, “I tried to stop him, but he started stabbing children and others,” Kyodo reported.

“He then moved dozens of meters away and stabbed his own neck,” the driver added.

Please pray for everyone who was impacted by the stabbing. This is a terrible tragedy.
