On Thursday night, the shocking news was confirmed that comedian Kevin Hart would be stepping down as the host of the upcoming Academy Awards. In recent days, several of Hart’s old Tweets have resurfaced, causing extreme controversy.

According to ET Online, Hart’s Tweets from around a decade ago included “homophobic remarks” and “offensive slurs.” The Tweets resurfaced on Tuesday shortly after it was confirmed that Hart would be hosting the 91st Academy Awards.

On Thursday afternoon, the 39-year-old posted a video, explaining that he has apologized for the comments before. He said that he has grown as a person and that the old Tweets should not still be following him. However, several people felt that the video was insincere.

Only a few hours after posting the video, Hart took to social media again, but this time to announce he would not be hosting the Oscars.

Hart wrote, “I have made the choice to step down from hosting this year’s Oscar’s…this is because I do not want to be a distraction on a night that should be celebrated by so many amazing talented artists. I sincerely apologize to the LGBTQ community for my insensitive words from my past.”

He continued, “I’m sorry that I hurt people. I am evolving and want to continue to do so. My goal is to bring people together not tear us apart. Much love & appreciation to the Academy. I hope we can meet again.”

Within minutes after Hart revealed he would not be hosting, several people took to social media to share their opinions on who they believe should host.
