The sad news was confirmed over the weekend that former USC football captain Kevin Ellison had suddenly died. The star athlete reportedly died at the age of 31 while walking along a freeway in California.
The Los Angeles County coroner’s office confirmed that Ellison died in the San Fernando Valley on the I-5 freeway, according to the Los Angeles Times. Little other information regarding his death has been made available.
Ellison was a talented athlete and beloved teammate. He played safety all four years at USC and then went on to play for the San Diego Chargers for one season. Sadly, his family noted that he had been struggling with mental health issues before the time of his death and had to work through severe disorientation even in years prior.
In 2012, the athlete was charged with federal arson when he set a bed on fire in a lodge. The damages amounted to around $50,000. Ultimately, Ellison agreed to pay over $80,000 in restitution. Following that, his family kept a close watch on his mental health.
Sadly, Ellison has passed away. Now, his family revealed that they will be donating his brain to Boston University to study CTE, a degenerative brain condition linked to football.
Many people have taken to social media to mourn Ellison’s death. Below are some of the posts:
