Over the weekend, very serious domestic abuse allegations surfaced against Democratic U.S. Representative Keith Ellison. The son of Ellison’s ex-girlfriend Karen Monahan, Austin Monahan, detailed the alleged abuse in a Facebook post.

The post will not be shared on Faith Family America due to graphic language. In the social media statement, Austin claims that he discovered hundreds of emotionally abusive text messages from Ellison to his mother. In addition, he also found a video that showed Ellison dragging Karen off the bed and screaming derogatory comments at her.

Karen later confirmed that what her son said was entirely true. According to Karen, the abuse was still going on right before he announced his run for attorney general; the primary will take place on Tuesday, August 14th.

Ellison responded to the serious allegations on Sunday. The attorney general nominee denied the accusations, reported Fox News.

"Karen and I were in a long-term relationship which ended in 2016, and I still care deeply for her well-being," Ellison said in a statement. "This video does not exist because I never behaved in this way, and any characterization otherwise is false."

In wake of the allegations, several politicians have spoken out against Ellison including Minnesota House Speaker Debra Hilstrom. She referred to the incident as "troubling."
