On Thursday, an Amber Alert was issued for a young girl in upstate New York. Karmerie Elliott was the 14-year-old of the AMBER Alert in Byron, New York.
Thankfully, the teen and her kidnapper were found in Mansfield, Pennsylvania. Elliott was safe and sound. She was taken by 22-year-old Guillermo Torres-Acevedo, who just days before was accused of statutory rape, reported local news.
Torres-Acevedo was taken into custody on warrants from New York state and is being held in Pennsylvania pending extradition proceedings. Elliott was safely returned to her family.
When the Amber Alert was issued, deputies said Elliott was under circumstances that lead the police to believe that she is in danger of "serious harm and/or death." Torres-Acevedo had been arrested Monday by State Police on charges of second-degree rape, second-degree criminal sexual act, and endangering the welfare of a child.
The charges relate to contact with a 14-year-old girl. They did not identify if it was Kamerie.
Charges were filed on Monday against Torres-Acevedo and his bail was set at $5,000 cash or bond. Torres-Acevedo was released through a county pre-trial release program called Genesee Justice that conducts bail evaluations.
He was determined to be a low flight risk. However, he was released only hours before the incident that led to the Amber Alert.
Thank goodness the Amber Alert did its job and found this young girl so quickly!
