The Nascar community is in mourning on Saturday after a household name passed away. J.D. Gibbs died at the age of 49 after a long health battle.

Even before J.D. found personal success, he was well known because of his famous father. Joe Gibbs was famous in the football world and then switched his talents to stock-car racing. J.D. followed in his father’s footsteps in both sports.

After playing football, J.D. was a part-time driver and over-the-wall crew member for Nascar. Between 1998 to 2002, he reportedly made 13 Nascar national series starts.

Later in his career, J.D. served as the president and co-chairman of Joe Gibbs Racing. The family racing team were the ones who broke the news of J.D.’s death.

Nascar Chairman & CEO Jim France said, “We were privileged to watch J.D. Gibbs grow within the sport, displaying an endearing personality, a keen eye for talent and the strong business acumen that helped grow Joe Gibbs Racing into a pre-eminent Nascar team.”

He continued, “The Nascar family has lost a truly special member. On behalf of Nascar and the France family, I extend my deepest condolences to Joe Gibbs, Pat, Melissa, Coy and the entire Gibbs family.”

J.D. (Jason Dean) was born in 1969. At the time, Joe Gibbs was the assistant football coach at the University of Southern California. Growing up, J.D. found a love for athletics.

J.D. played defensive back and quarterback at William & Mary from 1987-90. After his collegiate career, he switched over to racing.

In 2006 J.D. said, “I wasn’t really stellar from an athletic standpoint. So for me to go into business, starting a family business with my dad, was really great. I’m glad we had the chance to do that together.”

In the fall of 2014, J.D.’s health began to fail. He was diagnosed with a neurological diagnosis. Now, he has sadly passed away at a young age.

Please be praying for J.D.'s family during this sad time. Share your prayers here! In other recent news, please also be praying for the legendary Christian singer who just said a tearful goodbye to his wife of 65 years.
