Earlier this year, the NFL organization and fans were devastated after learning that the legendary Jim Kelly’s cancer returned. Kelly, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2002, was a star quarterback for the Buffalo Bills for nearly a dozen years.
As previously reported, Kelly, 58, was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma in 2013 but was declared cancer-free shortly after a procedure on the jaw. He announced the return of his cancer in March and asked the public for prayers. According to Sports Illustrated, Kelly recently had surgery in March that led to him being in the ICU for several days and a follow-up surgery in June.
The man of faith was honored at the 2018 ESPYs in Los Angeles, California on Wednesday, July 18th. At the event, he accepted the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance from John Elway and Dan Marino.
His emotional acceptance speech didn’t leave a dry eye in the house. Audience members, including singer Ciara and NFL star Aaron Rodgers, were seen tearing up as Kelly preached about the significance of being a “difference maker" and his faith in God.
“When I look back in my life. I’ve always lived by the four F’s. The one I had, but I changed it, was fun. Even though I still have fun, I put the one in there that means more to me now than it ever has — and that’s my faith. My faith in the good Lord that He has plans for my life,” he said as he pointed up.
Kelly has previously mentioned that in addition to Faith, he lives by Family, Friends, and Fans.
“Through my son Hunter, we will make a difference,” he added referencing to his 8-year-old child who sadly passed away in 2005 from a rare disease.
"Thank you for honoring me and humbling me with this award. I love you all. God bless and may the good Lord continue to bless you!" Kelly concluded.
