In a heart-wrenching interview with Inside Edition, Jill Cummins, who is filing for divorce from kidnapping and pedophile suspect Tad Cummins, revealed the warning she gave to her 50-year-old husband when she felt he was getting too close to his 15-year-old student Elizabeth Thomas.
“We were a normal family,” Jill began. “Never in a million years [would] we have dreamed that this would have happened.”
Jill revealed that when she went on national television to beg her husband to give himself up and bring Elizabeth home during his 39-day flight from justice, she refused to use the script authorities wrote for her.
“What were some of the things they wanted you to say?” Inside Edition asked.
“‘I love you,’ ‘I forgive you,’ ‘Please come back to me.’ That sort of thing,” Jill replied. “And I didn’t want to say that. That wasn’t at all my message.”
According to CNN, she instead said, “Tad, this is not you. This is not who you are. We can help you get through this. No matter how far you’ve gone, or what’s happening right now, God’s grace is sufficient for you. And He wants you to come home.”
Jill also played a big role in giving investigators tools to find Tad, including studying surveillance videos of possible sightings.
She described how, before the disappearance, Elizabeth was like another daughter to her and Tad as they helped her deal with her difficult home life.
Elizabeth reportedly even went to church with Jill and Tad, according to CNN.
But at some point, Jill began to become uncomfortable.
“[Tad] was getting really close to her — a father-daughter close, a friendship close,” she described. “And I knew that. And I discussed that with him and explained to him that ‘She’s your student. We can’t be so close to her.’”
But she added, “Never did I think there was a romantic thing going on between the two of them. There were no signs of that.”
While Jill believes Elizabeth was heavily manipulated by Tad, she admitted in tears, “I do feel slightly betrayed by her because she knew him. She knew what we had and what she was destroying.”
“If you could talk to Elizabeth, what would you say to her?” Inside Edition asked.
