Major Update After Dozens of Passengers Ill on Flight to JFK, All Signs Point to One Culprit

September 05, 2018Sep 05, 2018

On Wednesday morning, September 5, troubling news was reported out of JFK Airport. Several reports claimed that around 100 passengers had fallen "seriously ill" while on the flight.

The Emirates Flight 203 was going from Dubai to JFK. While midair, the pilot reported that "dozens of people" had become extremely ill, with many people experiencing fevers over 100 degrees.

Upon arrival, the passengers on the flight were put under quarantine as emergency responders attended the scene.

While all of the initial reports claimed that there were 100 passengers on the flight who became ill, Emirates Airlines claimed that there were actually only 10 passengers that were confirmed as being "seriously ill."

They wrote, "Statement: Emirates can confirm that about 10 passengers on #EK203 from Dubai to New York were taken ill. On arrival, as a precaution, they were attended to by local health authorities. All others will disembark shortly. The safety & care of our customers is our first priority."

According to NYC Press Secretary Eric Phillips, the main possible culprit of the sicknesses is the flu. He reported that the flight had stopped in Mecca, which is currently experiencing a flu outbreak.

Later, he corrected the Tweet, saying that the fight was actually direct and therefore did not stop in Mecca. However, he said that some of the ill passengers may have come from Mecca.

Now, as of 1:30 p.m. EST, passengers have been cleared to continue on with their travel. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, most of the 521 passengers that had been on the flight were allowed to continue on with their travel only 2-3 hours after landing, while others were under quarantine even longer. Additionally, at least 10 sick passengers were sent to Jamaica Hospital in Queens.

Phillips reported that the final number of sick passengers was 19. 10 of those were sent to the hospital, while the other 9 refused medical attention.
