Several months ago, 13-year-old Jayme Lynn Closs was abducted from her home on the same evening that both of her parents, James and Denise Closs, were murdered. The perpetrator, 21-year-old Jake Patterson, allegedly chose their family at random to carry out the horrific double homicide and abduction.
Closs spent roughly 88 days in captivity, wondering each day if it would be her last. By the grace of God, the young woman eventually escaped after Patterson left her alone.
On Friday, May 24th, Patterson was officially sentenced after pleading guilty to two counts of intentional homicide and one count of kidnapping, reported Fox News. The judge declared Patterson to receive two life sentences without the possibility of parole. Patterson was also sentenced to an additional 25 years in prison for abducting Closs.
“You are an extreme danger to the public in general,” the judge handling the case said at the sentencing. “There is no doubt in my mind that you are one of the most dangerous men to walk on this planet."
Closs was not present in the courtroom but an emotional statement was read on her behalf:
"Jake Patterson took a lot of things that I love away from me. It makes me the most sad that he took away my mom and my dad," she stated. "I used to love to go out with my friends. I love to go to school. I love to dance. He took all of those things away from me, too. It's too hard for me to go out in public."
“He can't take my freedom. He thought that he could own me, but he was wrong. I was smarter,” the young girl added. “He should stay locked up forever.”
This comes shortly after the teenager received a special honor in her hometown of Barron County, Wisconsin. She was recognized as the “Hometown Hero” for her unbelievable bravery in escaping from her kidnapper.
Please continue to pray for the Closs family as they continue with the healing process. Praise God for bringing justice in this trial.
