The shocking news was reported on Thursday, December 20 that another top White House official will be resigning. Defense Secretary James Mattis will be retiring at the end of February.
Mattis’ departure adds to the long list of White House executives who have decided to leave over the last 1.5 years. According to Fox News, Mattis will step down “with distinction.”
President Trump tweeted about the situation.
He wrote, “General Jim Mattis will be retiring, with distinction, at the end of February, after having served my Administration as Secretary of Defense for the past two years. During Jim’s tenure, tremendous progress has been made, especially with respect to the purchase of new fighting…”
He continued, “…equipment. General Mattis was a great help to me in getting allies and other countries to pay their share of military obligations. A new Secretary of Defense will be named shortly. I greatly thank Jim for his service!”
As opposed to a few other White House departures, Mattis was reportedly not pushed out of his role and this was not a forced departure.
Mattis called it a “privilege” to serve in his role. However, he said that President Trump has “the right to have a Secretary of Defense whose views are better aligned with yours on these and other subjects.”
Mattis will be leaving on February 29, 2019.
