Israel and Iran may be at the brink of a full-scale war after an unprovoked attack by Iranian forces Wednesday night was met with a deadly reply from Israel on Thursday.
On Wednesday, 20 Iranian rockets launched from Syria were either met by Israel’s infamous Iron Dome defense system or failed to get close enough to Israeli soil, according to Israeli newspaper Haaretz. The Israeli Defense Forces believe Iran’s Revolutionary Guard’s Quds Force was targeting Israeli soldiers.
Iran denies having any of their elite soldiers in Syria, Haaretz reported. Iran claimed that Syria itself fired the missiles.
Unconvinced, the Israeli Defense Forces responded on Thursday by launching the biggest airstrike on another country since the 1973 Yom Kippur War, 45 years ago, according to Fox News. Israeli jets smashed over a dozen Iranian targets in Syria, the Jerusalem Post reported.
IDF Spokesman Brig.-Gen. Ronen Manelis explained, "Tonight reflects what we are preparing for the future. The Quds Force chose to act against the State of Israel in the wrong place. We won't accept an Iranian entrenchment in Syria and the Quds Force has paid a very heavy price.”
Differing reports are coming in about how many people were killed in Syria by Israel’s airstrike, from three to 23. Despite the small size of the country, Israel’s military is ranked 16th in the world by Global Firepower.
The White House praised Israel’s actions on Thursday.
