On Thursday, President Trump shot back at Nancy Pelosi after the Speaker of the House canceled his State of the Union Address. Pelosi was set to leave the U.S. for a week on a trip to Afghanistan, stopping in Brussels, when Trump decided she should be staying in the country to work on ending the shutdown.
The House Speaker was reportedly on the tarmac about to take off for a public relationships trip she had planned to Brussels, Egypt, and Afghanistan, when Trump told her the trip had been postponed while the government shutdown continues, reported CNN.
President Trump said he was denying Pelosi a military plane for her trip. He wrote a letter about why he denied her the plane, saying she's welcome to fly commercial.
"Due to the Shutdown, I am sorry to inform you that your trip to Brussels, Egypt, and Afghanistan has been postponed," Trump wrote to Pelosi. "We will reschedule this seven-day excursion when the Shutdown is over."
He added, "Obviously, if you would like to make your journey by flying commercial, that would certainly be your prerogative."
The administration "worked with the Air Force and (the Defense Department) and basically took away the rights to the plane from the speaker," one White House official said.
According to CNN, the POTUS has the authority to "direct the Defense Department to not use military assets to support a congressional delegation to military theaters." This includes not providing air transport.
A Pelosi spokesman responded to Trump's letter. She pointed to the President's own shutdown trip to Iraq as a reason Pelosi should be allowed to go.
"The purpose of the trip was to express appreciation & thanks to our men & women in uniform for their service & dedication, & to obtain critical national security & intelligence briefings from those on the front lines," Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill tweeted.
The aftermath of Pelosi's trip sparked some hilarious photos. Of course, Pelosi and her team were already on the tarmac, so they—and all their luggage—had to be returned to their offices at the capitol.
Brent Scher captured a hilarious photo of Pelosi's luggage sitting outside her office. The trolley was stacked high for her seven-day trip.
Another Twitter user, Fox News' Jason Donner, tweeted a series of photos showing the bus holding the members of Congress who were accompanying Pelosi circling the block several times and idling before finally letting them exit.
President Trump certainly got the last laugh this time. People on Twitter seemed to think so.
