On September 9th, a Michigan mother, Carrie DeKlyen, passed away after refusing chemotherapy so she could give birth to her baby. Tragically, on September 20th, the infant, Life Lynn DeKlyen, also passed away, confirms People.
The baby girl passed away around 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday night. She spent her short life at the University of Michigan Hospital.
“We are just extremely heartbroken,” said her aunt, Sonya Nelson, tearfully.
Carrie delivered Life via cesarean section on September 6th. Just three days later, Carrie passed away at the young age of 37.
At the time, Carrie’s husband, Nick DeKlyen, said Life—born at 24 weeks and five days—was faring well. However, Nelson revealed that the baby girl “took a turn for the worse” this week.
“We don’t have any answers,” said Nelson. “Maybe Carrie needed her.”
DeKlyn, who was from Detroit and has five other children, Elijah, 18, Isaiah, 16, Nevaeh, 11, Leila, 4, and Jez, 2, chose to not treat her glioblastoma after her diagnosis in April 2017. Glioblastoma is an aggressive, rapidly growing malignant tumor that can affect the brain and spinal cord.
She initially tried to treat the cancer as a part of a clinical trial, but doctors informed her that she would need to “terminate her pregnancy” to receive the treatment. Carrie refused to do so.
“We gave up all of Carrie’s treatment to give Life a chance to survive,” said Nick earlier this year. “Her birth meant that this wasn’t all for nothing, my wife will pass on, and my baby will live.”
It wasn’t an easy decision for the couple. When the story initially broke, Nick shared his sadness.
“She wanted this, but it’s tough,” he said. “I’m trying to be happy for the baby, but the love of my life is hours away from dying, it hurts so bad.”
After the delivery, Carrie was removed from life support. Her family wrote on her “Cure 4 Carrie” Facebook page that Carrie was “very comfortable she is in God’s hands until he calls her home.”
Please pray for the DeKlyen family as they deal with this double loss. They’re mourning a loss that now feels futile.
In other news, a Famous Christian Evangelist tragically died of cancer. Pray for his family as well.
