A great tragedy occurred over the weekend as a result of a horrific “twin disaster.” A powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck the coast of the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, which triggered a massive tsunami.
Amidst the devastating news of this double natural disaster, authorities were searching for 86 Bible camp children, reported CNN. Unfortunately, multiple children were discovered dead in a local church hall and others are still missing.
On Saturday, September 29th, the death toll reached more than 400 people. However, the death toll was expected to rise dramatically since a number of people faced critical injuries, while several others were unaccounted for.
The total death toll spiked to at least 1,234 people on Tuesday, October 2nd. Sadly, recovery efforts are ongoing and more bodies are expected to be discovered in the upcoming days.
The quake-tsunami duo also caused an extensive amount of destruction to nearby properties and land. The natural disasters severely damaged hospitals, other buildings, and surrounding urban areas.
Additionally, resources are scarce. Food, water, and other necessary living supplies have been difficult for locals to obtain, according to CNN.
Please pray for the people of Indonesia. This story is developing and will be updated as details emerge over the next few days.
