IKEA, a multi-billion dollar furniture store, is famously known for selling ready-to-assemble furniture products. The company sells its products online and in store with more than 400 retail locations worldwide. As the company continues to grow, new stores are popping up frequently.
In addition to their self-assemble products, the IKEA brand makes its mark with two signature colors — blue and yellow. Also, their retail locations are designed in a non-traditional fashion where the customer is guided around the entire store. In other retail stores, customers can usually wander to selected sections as they please.
However, what many people don’t know about IKEA is that the company’s name is actually an acronym. Each letter stands for something special in relation to the founder.
The I and the K stand for Ingvar Kamprad, which is the first and last name of the founder. E is for Elmtaryd, the farm where he grew up. Finally, A stands for Agunnaryd, which is the name of his hometown in southern Sweden (Times of India).
