Curtains up, lights the lights! Stars are like Hugh Jackman, Jesse Williams Rachel DratchThey were among those honored when the 2022 Tony Award nominations for the Best Actor were announced on Monday May 9.

New musical Strange LoopThe pack was led by 11 nominations, and the Michael Jackson musical, MJJackman received an impressive 10 nominations. Jackman, 53, was awarded his second award for Best Performance by an Actor In a Leading Role in Musical for his work in The Music Man, which was nominated for six awards, including Best Revival of a Musical (for his costar) and best actress in a Musical (for him). Sutton Foster.

“[Hugh]It is a pleasure to work alongside him. He is as talented and wonderful as he is. [also] kind, generous and humble,” the Younger alum told ElleMarch’s article about her leading guy. “He is everything that you hope he would be and more. He is a true partner. He has become a friend, which is one of the best things about this whole experience. It is just a joy to play with him every day, have fun and make each other laugh.”

A Strange Loop 2022 Tony Award Nominations

This is Foster’s seventh nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical. She was previously honored with the award in 2002 and 2011. Thoroughly Modern Millie Anything goes, respectively.

Another star-studded production which received several Tony nominations in 2022 was Take Me OutThis movie centers on a team of baseball players who must deal with the consequences of their gay star player coming out during the season. Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Michael Oberholtzer Jesse WilliamsThey were all nominated as Best Performance by an Actor In a Featured Roll in a Play. The show itself was nominated as Best Revival of a Play.

Williams, who will be making his Broadway debut as Darren Lemming’s lead role, joined Take Me OutShortly after you have left Grey’s Anatomy. “I was leaving a job that I’d been at and been comfortable in for some time. I didn’t want to be too comfortable,” he told Entertainment WeeklyMarch. “I wanted to do something very different. If I’m going to a make a shift, I want to make a shift with purpose. I wanted to do something that was really going to challenge me and scare me.”

He continued: “Baseball played a really integral part in my life — in my childhood and my upbringing and my connection to my father and my siblings — with metaphorical learnings about the game and life as a whole. But the [play’s]These themes are relevant to issues such as identity, self-realization, discrimination, and purpose. They not only strike a nerve with me as a human being, but are important and compelling for society to wrestle with.”

Many of the nominees were affected in some way by the coronavirus pandemic that shut down the Great White Way over a year ago. Although theaters have reopened, the effects of COVID-19 continue to impact the Tony Awards and the shows being honored on the big night.

MJ The Musical 2022 Tony Award Nominations

“Due to the challenges that Broadway has faced in recent weeks, and in an effort to allow nominators to see Tony eligible shows, we have decided to extend the deadline for eligibility requirements,” Charlotte St. Martin, president of The Broadway League, and Heather Hitchens, president and CEO of the American Theatre Wing, announced in an April statement amid an uptick in COVID-19 cases and canceled performances.

After the September 2021 scaled-down ceremony, the 2022 Tony Awards will be a return to tradition. This year’s event, hosted by newly-minted Oscar winner and Broadway veteran Ariana DeBose, will take places at Radio City Music Hall on Sunday June 12, in New York City. This is where the awards have been held since decades.
