How Much Would the 12 Days of Christmas Cost Today?

December 14, 2015Dec 14, 2015

The original song 12 days of Christmas originated in England in 1780, although its roots were much earlier. It was apparently a children's game, where someone had to memorize each line and they would lose once they forgot one. The actual 12 days were not the 12 days before Christmas Day (which would start on Dec. 13) but were the 12 days after Christmas?

The cost?  In today's dollars, according to the PNC Christmas Price Index, it would cost $155,407.18! to buy your true love all the gifts.

Can you guess what was the most expensive?  (Hint:  It's not the gold)

A partridge in a pear tree
2 turtle doves
3 French hens
4 Colly birds
5 gold rings
6 geese a laying
7 swans a swimming
8 maids a milking
9 drummers drumming
10 pipers piping
11 ladies
12 lords a leaping
(The answer? 11 ladies leaping! Don't ask us how they figured all this!)
