How to make gingerbread reindeer cookies

Start by making your gingerbread dough from scratch or mixing it up. Once your gingerbread dough is ready to be rolled, grab some parchment paper. Between two sheets of parchment paper, roll the cookie dough out to a thickness of 1/4″. Keep in mind that the dough will roll out easier if it’s chilled; parchment paper will also keep your work area clean and flour-free.

Royal icing typically consists of meringue, water, and powdered sugar. But meringue doesn’t have to be a staple in every kitchen. You can make royal icing with corn syrup and powdered sugar. This ingredient is more likely to be in your kitchen during the holiday season. 

Simple Royal Icing with Powdered Sugar Recipe


  • 1 and ½ cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons warm water
  • ½ tablespoon light corn syrup
  • ⅛ teaspoon vanilla


  1. In a small bowl, combine warm water, light corn syrup, vanilla extract, and salt. Stir until the corn syrup has completely dissolved. 
  2. In a medium bowl, combine powdered sugar and water. Mix sugar water and powdered sugar together. Stir well. You can add more water to thin the icing. Add more powdered Sugar if the icing is too thin. Decorate cookies immediately using icing. 

To apply the frosting, use a disposable bag or a bag with the corner cut off. Make simple antlers and outline the reindeer’s face using the frosting. You can also make dazzling antlers with mini pretzels.

Apply chocolate chips to the eyes and red or brown M&Ms to the nose. Gel can be added to the royal frosting if you prefer.
