Here's Why We Celebrate 'Flag Day' Every June 14

Every year on June 14, the United States of America celebrates “Flag Day.” It is a special day that honors the Stars and Stripes.

While many people know that “Flag Day” takes place every June, not many Americans actually know what it’s all about. On Thursday morning, Fox News talked about the meaning of the day and how it became a tradition!

Flag Day points back to June 14, 1777. On that day, the Second Continental Congress made a specific resolution about a flag for the United States of America.

It said, “Resolved, that the Flag of the thirteen United States shall be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the Union be thirteen stars, white on a blue field, representing a new constellation.”

Throughout the 1800s, the flag was celebrated. In fact, on June 14, 1877, Congress instructed that the flag is “flown from all public buildings across the country.”

However, it wasn’t until May 30, 1916, that a proclamation for Flag Day was issued.

President Woodrow Wilson wrote, “I therefore suggest and request that throughout the nation and if possible one very community the fourteenth day of June be observed as Flag Day with special patriotic exercises.”

Flag Day was made permanent in 1949 when President Harry Truman reportedly signed its observance into law. While it is not a federal holiday, some states have issued it as a state holiday. Many areas have a special parade on June 14th or around that time to celebrate it as well.

On Thursday morning, the White House issued a statement about it.

They said, “Today we honor the Stars and Stripes that fly over our country and we remember the brave men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice protecting our great American flag and our freedom.”
