Here's Why Graham Believes the U.S. Should Boycott the Upcoming Olympics

The 2018 Winter Olympics will begin in February in Pyeongchang, South Korea. As the Winter Games quickly approach, extreme controversy has accompanied it.

Last month, the International Olympics Committee announced that Russia would be disqualified from competing due to a massive drug scandal. Another major source of controversy has been about North Korea's participation in the games.

On Tuesday, South Korea's unification minister announced that they would be having a discussion with the northern officials about the upcoming games.

Cho Myong-gyon reportedly said, "We look forward to candidly discussing interests from both sides face-to-face with North Korea along with the North's participation in the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics...I repeat, the government is open to talking with North Korea, regardless of time, location, and form."

Later, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said that his country was gearing up for the competition.

According to NBC News, he said, "North Korea's participation in the Winter Games will be a good opportunity to show unity of the people, and we wish the games will be a success."

Now, Senator Lindsey Graham (R) shared his opinion on the matter on Twitter. He believes that the United States should boycott the Winter Olympics if North Korea is allowed to participate.

He said, "Allowing Kim Jon Un's North Korea to participate in #WinterOlympics would give legitimacy to the most illegitimate regime on the planet. I'm confidence South Korea will reject this absurd overture and fully believe that if North Korea goes to the Winter Olympics, we do not."

Despite Graham's belief, there is no other indication that the U.S. will back out of the Olympics. However, last month White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said that safety is the first priority.

She said, "The protection of Americans is our top priority and we are engaged with the South Koreans and other partner nations to secure the venues."
